Forget 10 and 2: There's a Safer Grip for Modern Cars

Over the years, I've seen all kinds of unusual steering techniques—one-knee driving, one-finger control (usually while eating a burger), and even the classic white-knuckle grip at 10 and 2.

For many of us, the 10 and 2 hand position was drilled into our heads as the correct way to hold the steering wheel. But is it still the safest option? According to Cameron Wearing, Director of Research and Development at the Australian Driving Institute, the answer is a firm no.

The 10 and 2 Rule is Outdated

The 10 and 2 position made sense for older cars—those without power steering and with different suspension and steering systems. Back then, a higher grip allowed for better control. But today’s cars have advanced power steering, meaning this method is not only outdated but also dangerous.

Wearing explains that modern steering systems have a different steering rate, measured in degrees per second. The 10 and 2 grip was ideal for unassisted older cars, but today’s vehicles require a different approach.

The Airbag Danger

Another major issue with 10 and 2 is the risk posed by airbag deployment. Airbags were introduced in the ’90s, and if your hands are positioned too high on the wheel when one deploys, you could suffer severe arm injuries—hyperextension, torn ligaments, or even dismemberment.

The Right Way to Grip the Wheel

So, what’s the safest way to hold your steering wheel? The answer is simple: 9 and 3.

Wearing emphasizes that this position is based on physics and provides better control, stability, and balance. Plus, modern cars are designed with this position in mind—your thumbs naturally rest on the buttons, and your fingers can easily operate the stalks without removing your hands from the wheel.

While there’s no Australian law mandating this hand position, it’s clear that 9 and 3 is the best choice for safety and control. So, put down that burger, get your hands in the right spot, and enjoy a safer drive.
