Coming Soon to Tynan Mahindra Kirrawee: Mahindra’s Bold New Off-Road SUV Inspired by the Thar.e Concept banner

The off-road SUV scene in Australia is about to welcome an exciting new contender. Mahindra, the Indian automotive powerhouse, is preparing to unleash a rugged new SUV with bold design inspiration drawn from the Thar.e concept — and it’s set to land at Tynan Mahindra Kirrawee in the near future.

Combining retro appeal, modern engineering, and Mahindra’s legendary off-road DNA, this upcoming SUV will offer Aussie adventurers a compelling alternative to the usual suspects like the Toyota Prado, Ford Everest, and Isuzu MU-X.

🧭 From Concept to Reality: Meet the Thar.e-Inspired SUV

While the original Thar.e concept made headlines in 2023 for its all-electric platform, the production version destined for Australia will feature an internal combustion engine (ICE). A hybrid powertrain is also in development, although it may not be available at launch.

Unlike the current Thar and Thar Roxx, which won’t be coming to Australia, this new SUV has been specifically designed with global markets in mind – including Australia, where Mahindra is rapidly expanding its footprint.

According to Mahindra’s Head of International Operations Sachin Arolkar, the production model will retain the Thar.e’s distinctive design:

“It will be very, very similar to the Thar.e concept in styling terms,” he confirmed.

🚙 Rugged Looks, Serious Capability

Expect bold, boxy styling cues reminiscent of Hummer and Jeep, with retro-modern touches that will make this SUV stand out from the growing pack of Chinese and mainstream competitors.

But the big surprise? This Mahindra off-roader will break from tradition by riding on a monocoque platform instead of the ladder-frame chassis typically favoured for heavy-duty off-roading. The change brings enhanced on-road comfort and refinement, similar to how Land Rover has modernised its Discovery and Defender lines.

Mahindra President of Automotive Technology, Velusamy Ramasamy, emphasised that off-road performance remains a top priority:

“You’re bang on,” he said, when asked if the new model would compete with the latest generation of monocoque off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender.

🛠 Powertrain & Pricing

While the full engine specs are still under wraps, Mahindra has confirmed the vehicle will:

  • Launch with an internal combustion engine
  • Offer a hybrid powertrain option later
  • Prioritise rugged durability and affordability
  • Feature independent suspension for improved handling

Given Mahindra’s competitive pricing strategy, it’s expected that this new SUV will be sharply priced — likely positioned between the Suzuki Jimny ($34,990+) and GWM Tank 300 ($46,990 drive-away), making it a serious value proposition in the off-road SUV space.

🇮🇳 Made for Global Markets – Including Australia

Mahindra has confirmed this SUV will be launched in Australia, continuing the brand’s aggressive push to grow its presence. With ambitions to be among the top 15 automotive brands in Australia, Mahindra is investing in new models that appeal to both traditional off-roaders and urban families seeking adventure-ready vehicles.

Australia’s unique conditions have played a role in shaping Mahindra’s upcoming line-up, ensuring vehicles are tested and tuned to local expectations.
